TRAINING ATTORNEY

Location: Nairobi, Kenya

The Need
International Justice Mission (IJM) Kenya is working to bring relief to victims of child sexual assault, police abuse of power and false imprisonment. IJM seeks to hold to account perpetrators of these crimes; and aims to bring transformation to the public justice system as a whole.
IJM is seeking a qualified, and passionate, professional, and highly motivated individual to use their legal skills and experience to
effect positive change in the Kenya public justice system. The Training Attorney will have the opportunity to develop and implement trainings for public justice system leaders, educate the public on how to protect victims of police abuse of power offences, and design and advocate for reforms to the public justice system. IJM Kenya supports government partners and Civil Society Organizations to identify gaps in the public justice system to ensure that poor people have access to justice. The goal is to assist government and non-government actors to structurally improve the public justice system in a sustainable way to ensure that justice for the poor is possible.
This position is based in Nairobi, Kenya and reports to the Structural Transformation (ST) Program Director.

Responsibilities
Training and Oversight
  • Develop and revise curriculum and training plans for technical trainings of police officers, public prosecutors, and other officials;
  • Develop materials for the general public and youth networks;
  • Conduct training needs assessments with participant populations and incorporate expert input into the training presentations and content development;
  • Advise ST project partners on their training plans, curriculum, and facilitate best practices;
  • Lead and coordinate training and sensitization events for public justice system officials and the general public;
  • Lobby judges, magistrates and public prosecutors to improve service provision to poor; and
  • Represent IJM in public speaking engagements, meetings and publicity events.


 Support and Development
  • Supervise, mentor, and manage the efforts of the Training Administrator to meet training and sensitization goals;
  • Provide regular feedback to the ST Program Director on training program progress, including advice on potential ST program revisions;
  • Support the M&E Coordinator in designing and revising pre-/post-tests and post-training data collection tools to effectively capture the results of training;
  • Provide regular feedback to the Director of Casework to track training participants’ interaction with IJM staff in their collaborative casework projects;
  • Assist in hosting guests, visitors, and volunteers; and
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.
Travel Requirements
  • This position requires some travel to and from areas within Nairobi and its environs during working hours. Some trainings may be held in other parts of Kenya but it is anticipated that travel outside Nairobi will be less frequent.
Required Skills and Experience
  • Law degree from an accredited University;
  • Admitted Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, with a current practicing certificate;
  • Five or more years of experiences as attorney, paralegal or legal assistant;
  • Two or more years of experience as a trainer, public speaker, teacher, or similar duties;
  • Excellent critical thinking, legal analysis, and oral and written communication skills;
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili, with excellent writing and oration in both; and
  • Computer literate with proficiency in MS Word, Outlook and Excel.
