Project/Proposal Summary: 
Young people from NEP feel marginalized without opportunities political and economic participation, thus putting them at risk of recruitment by groups and movements espousing and/or engaging in violence. The hypothesis of Yes Youth Can – Northeastern Province, is that this marginalization may manifest itself as participation in violent extremism.

USAID/Kenya will conduct a baseline assessment in the first quarter of 2014 to gather data for both a future impact evaluation and a future performance evaluation of YYC-NEP. Phase 1 was the design of the baseline research. This scope of work is for Phase 1I, which is the implementation of the research phase.
Position Summary: 
MSI seeks individuals to be members of a research team to conduct qualitative research throughout Northeastern Province as part of the baseline research. The selected candidates will be part of a research team under the direction of a team leader. The team members will be responsible for conducting key informant interviews and focus groups and tasks associated with these activities.

They will also liaise with field workers (supervisors, enumerators) of a survey firm conducting quantitative data collection in the field, some of which will be conducted in parallel to help address challenges as they arise and provide. The assignment is expected to begin in February 2014. Please note: this is a short term assignment and is open to Kenyan nationals only.
Responsibilities:
Moderate/facilitate focus groups in locations in Northeastern Province
Conduct key informant interviews in locations in Northeastern Province
Participate in training in Nairobi (approximately 4 days)
Oversee note takers and ensure note taking quality (both handwritten notes and flip-chart notes) for focus groups and key informant interviews
Submit complete transcripts from focus groups and key informant interviews
Submit field report covering issues encountered and observations made during the research
Debrief the team on key findings and issues encountered while conducting research
Liaise with enumerators in the field
Work in collaboration with MSI research team and survey research firm under the direction of the team leader

Qualifications: 
Bachelors degree in a social science discipline.
2-5 years experience conducting qualitative data collection, such as key informant interviews, facilitating/moderating focus groups etc.
Familiarity with quantitative research
2-5 years experience working on research teams
Written and oral fluency in Af-Somali, Kiswahili and English.
Ability and willingness to travel throughout Northeastern Province, including rural areas.

Desirable: Experience working with USAID, other external donors and/or its implementing partners.
Desirable: Experience with youth projects.
