Key Responsibilities;

• Analysing the market.

Roles & Responsibilities

The incumbent will be charged with the following duties & responsibilities;
  • Keeping an updated register of all properties owned by VEK
  • Obtaining Annual Land Rates demands for all properties owned and leased  by VEK from various registries around the country
  • Payment of all annual land rates for all properties
  • Obtaining Annual Clearance Certificates for each property
  • Proper and updated storage and filing of receipts and clearance certificates for each property.
  • Obtaining demands from all Local Authorities
  • Paying the rates
  • Obtaining Annual Clearance Certificates for all properties
  • Keeping and updated record of all Titles and their Expiry Dates
  • Reporting to HOL on any Title with 5 years to expiry and below
  • In collaboration with Legal Administrator, confirming that we have title to each property
  • Obtaining annual Search Certificates  for each property leased and owned by VEK
  • Investigating ,Confirming and reporting on  status of each title at the Lands Registry annually
  • In collaboration with Network Manager, monitoring all leases- term & expiry
  • Notifying HOL on any Lease with 5 years and below to expiry
  • Annual Leases status verification.
  • Reading Kenya Gazette and Newspapers and reporting to the HOL on any matter touching on any Lease or Title
  • Reading all Notices by National Lands Commission, Government Compulsory Acquisitions
  • Follow-up in collaboration with external counsel on all approvals at lands/city/ county/local authorities for subdivisions, amalgamation, change of use etc
  • Stamping and registration of all land related documents such as Agreements, Licences generated from within
  • Generating a Monthly Report on all the above activities to the HOL for distribution to MD.
Qualifications
  • Diploma in Law
  • At least 5 years in conveyancing land issues in a law firm/ lands registry
  • Ms- Office proficient
  • Driving License (S/He will be travelling around the country to various registries)

The Parliament of Kenya is one of the institutions set out in the Council of Legal Education (Admission) Regulations, 2007 as an institution in which students of the Kenya School of Law may undertake their Pupillage Programme. 

The Parliamentary Service Commission now seeks to engage six (6) highly motivated Kenyans to undertake their Pupillage Programme with the Parliament of Kenya for a period of six (6) months commencing January, 2015.
 
The successful pupils shall be selected from applicants who-
 
(a) possess at least a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree (Upper Second Class Honours) from a recognized University;
 
(b) are admitted to the Kenya School of Law;
 
(c) demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills in both English and Kiswahili, as evidenced by a score of at least a “B” plain grade in both subjects;
 
(d) demonstrate a proactive attitude and willingness to learn and to be part of a team handling challenging tasks within strict timelines; and
 
(e) are computer literate.

Legal Officer (Jobs in Kenya, October 2014)

Title: Legal Officer 

Overall Purpose: Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Legal Officer will be responsible for handling perfection of Legal / Credit documentation relating to approved facilities by providing high level quality support to credit division, business teams, and related units. 

The position also provides legal services to the Company in drafting and interpretation of legal instruments, interpretation of various statutes & regulations and give legal opinions on diverse issues. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Issuance and processing of Facility Letters upon receipt of duly approved Credit Approval, while observing turn-around time and high standards of accuracy.
  • Ensure appropriate security documentation on the Institution’s standard forms have been properly prepared before dispatch to the customer.
  • Instructing the Institution’s external Lawyers on securities documents to prepare, perfect and register at the various Land and Company registries. Performing liaison role between the functions of the Institution and the lawyers, professional valuers and insurance companies approved by the Institution, ensuring service level agreements agreed are adhered to.
  • Liaising with the external legal counsel and other service providers on security documentation process and ensuring that security documentation and other conditions of sanction have been perfected prior to authorizing the drawdown of facilities.
  • Liaising with the Branch Managers on all outstanding approval conditions and answering all queries relating to pending compliance certificates.
  • Management of legal due diligence and liaising with external legal counsel on all legal matters relating to the company.
  • Drafting standard contracts, specialised contracts and correspondences on legal matters, reviewing and negotiating contracts to which the company is a party. Ensuring that all such contract documents and third party contracts are promptly executed.
  • Preparing legal cases in conjunction with the external counsel, monitoring progress to ensure prompt resolution of all disputes, follow up on court cases facing the company and attend court hearings on behalf of the company whenever arises.
  • Handling redemption and takeover of facilities from and to other financial institutions and ensure terms and conditions of undertaking are in our favor and are strictly adhered to.
  • Keeping abreast with legal and policy developments and providing updates and advice to management on compliance.
  • Ensure legal and other security documents are properly kept and secured.
  • Providing legal advice to the management including reviewing legal documentation.
Minimum qualification and experience required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) from a reputable University.
  • Post-graduate diploma in Legal studies from the Kenya School of Law.
  • Be of good standing and possesses a current LSK practicing certificate.
  • An Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
  • Minimum two (2) years’ post admission experience in providing legal services preferably Conveyancing and Commercial Law in a reputable institution/legal firm.
  • Demonstrates good grasp of relevant laws including but not limited to Laws governing the Constitution of Kenya 2010; Labour Laws and Corporate Governance.
  • Have excellent interpersonal, negotiation, communication, analytical, organisational and people skills.
  • Sound understanding of lending in the microfinance industry in Kenya.
  • At least two years experience in credit documentation and excellent facilities drafting skills.
  • Ability to prioritise work and deliver high quality output within tight deadlines.
  • High follow though ability.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and co-ordinate the Company advocates and make periodical reports on any issues arising for consideration by the management.
  • Work with company advocates to ensure the organization is well represented in all legal matters and court cases.
  • Auditing the quality of pleadings and court presentation from the Company advocates and preparing reports and recommendations thereof.
  • Ensure thorough and detailed analysis of claim documents to enable early fraud detection and to effectively address the fraudulent claims within the company’s policies and guidelines
  • Prepare monthly status reports on all legal issues and make recommendations to the management.
  • Approval on negotiation strategy for the matters proposed for settlements by the Company Advocates and where necessary carrying out the negotiations with Third Party Advocates

Qualification and experience
  • Bachelors of Laws Degree, Diploma in Law(KSL),
  • Admission as an Advocate with a current practicing Certificate,
  • At least 3 years Post Admission experience in Litigation one of which must be in a reputable law firm and in a supervisory position

Job Description:
The legal officer shall represent KPAWU in litigation, legal administrative proceedings and disputes resolution proceedings; provide legal, tactical and strategic advice.

Position Title: Legal Officer (1 Position)
Reporting to: SGBV Coordinator
Job Location: Dadaab

Overall Purpose
Reporting to the SGBV Coordinator, the Legal Officer will provide legal advice, conduct trainings and sensitization campaigns in the Dadaab Refugee Operations.

Duties & Responsibilities
Liaise with the UNHCR protection officers on issues relating to protection and assistance of refugees
Participate and monitor KRCS areas of protection and programme activities in the refugee Camp.
Liaise with the camp management coordinator on timely service delivery to the refugees and the INGOs & NGOs in providing legal assistance to the refugees.
Organize and facilitate workshops /trainings in consultation with the Head of Operations on children, gender and women related issues.
Work closely with the camp management & SGBV teams while providing support on legaladvice to the SGBV survivors and other incidences encountered by the refugee community.
Conduct trainings on PSEA, RBA and human rights for all the sectorial committees and KRCS staff.
Conduct sensitization campaigns on the refugee act for the community leaders and CPPTS in the camp.
Advice /brief SGBV survivors and other clients whenever they are attending court sessions to either listen or act as a witness.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in law
Postgraduate Diploma from Kenya School of Law
Over two (2) years of experience in a refugee setup.
Key Competencies
Ready to work in difficult environmental conditions
Strong leadership, team building, conflict resolution and ability to deliver the Society’s strategic objectives
Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, data-base, email and utilization of the internet
