LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST

Position: Laboratory Technologist (1 position), MR7
Location: Kisumu East District Hospital
Reporting: Study Coordinator

Description       
Program description: This program is a collaboration between the Kenya Medical Research Institute and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It involves conducting research and program support for activities related to malaria, HIV and other diseases. It is
within this remit that the program has a vacancy in the HISS Branch -DBS VL STUDY

Essential Requirements
  • Diploma in medical laboratory from a recognized Institution , registered with the KMLTTB
  • Experience in performing HIV diagnosis and QC/QA on the same tests
  • More than 6 months experience in a busy clinical laboratory

Desired Qualities
  • Experience in phlebotomy , handling viral load samples and performing ART assays
  • Good knowledge in laboratory documentation, good record keeping and inventory management
  • Knowledge in molecular assays for HIV-1 diagnosis especially DBS technique
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Basic computer application packages

Responsibilities and Tasks
  • Viral load sample collection and storage
  • Perform ART assays in the laboratory
  • Maintain laboratory QC/QA in assigned areas of duty
  • Receive and track samples for the study
  • Perform any other duty as assigned by the study coordinator

Terms of Employment:
A six months contract renewable as per KEMRI scheme of service and a Probation period for the first 3 months. Remuneration: Compensation is negotiable within a relevant grade, based on education levels, relevant experience and demonstrated competency. The salary scheme is based on the KEMRI scales plus supplemental amounts.
