NURSE -COUNSELOR (MR 7) 2-POSITIONS

Program description:
This program is a collaboration between Kenya Medical Research Institute and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention whose remit is to conduct research in malaria, HIV and other diseases. There is currently a vacancy in the HISS 34 - Prevention Program.

Essential Requirements:
  • Diploma in Nursing from a recognized institution
  • Registered Nursing Officer with a Kenya Registered Nurse certificate additionally, must have training in HIV counseling and testing including PITC, DTC, VCT or DCT.
  • Minimum one year working experience
  • Certificate in Counseling
  • Proficiency in written and verbal English and Kiswahili
  • Must have strong interpersonal, communication, and listening skills.
  • Must be able to work in a professional and ethical manner with competence accountability, and integrity

Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge and previous experience of working in a SGBV program.
  • At least 2 years of direct psychosocial/counseling experience with a reputable agency.
  • Clear understanding of gender, abuse of power, and issues surrounding Gender based violence.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality, medical ethics and respect for clients at all times

Specific Tasks and Responsibilities:
  • The Nurse Counselor¡¦s responsibilities shall include but are not limited to the following:
  • Participate in the development of professional, effective and appropriate Gender based violence (SGBV) psychosocial programming, including direct individual and group counseling support
  • Provide professional and confidential services to survivors of SGBV including taking comprehensive history, HIV counseling and Testing, trauma counseling, PEP and ensure appropriate referral and linkage to care.
  • Offer child-friendly counseling and therapy sessions to minors.
  • Provide training, mentorship, and other technical support to case managers/ CHWs and service providers directly involved with the psychosocial component of the JOORTH SGBV programme.
  • Provide leadership and guidance regarding psychosocial activities to all case managers to ensure all programme activities meet best practice standards.
  • Participate in the SGBV community outreach activities
  • Strengthen and maintain networks with community leaders and groups and service providers to ensure that survivors receive compassionate support from the community and to encourage greater communication, collaboration and coordination among partners (protection, health, legal, and psychosocial sectors
  • Mobilize and educate the community members on the psychosocial needs for rape survivors and the nature of support the community can offer, including provision of safe houses
  • Organize and provide health talks during SGBV support group meetings
  • Provide health education and counseling to clients and their relatives on identified health problems and socio-economic issues related to their health.
  • Working closely with the Social Worker and the Government children Department, create linkages and referral to child care centers or orphanage
  • Coordinate the uptake of clinical PWP at the JOORTH
  • Assist with preparing all relevant reports regarding the SGBVR centre psychosocial activities.
  • Fulfill any other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Terms of Employment:
1(one) year renewable contract as per KEMRI scheme of service and a Probation period for the first 3 months. Remuneration: Compensation is negotiable with the relevant grade, based on educational levels, relevant experience and demonstrated competency.
