INTERN (JOBS AND VACANCIES IN KENYA SEPTEMBER 2013)

Background
The Horn of Africa is an important departure point for people in mixed migration flows. Each year tens of thousands of people leave or pass through Somalia and its neighbouring countries, including Yemen, in the hope of finding a safer or brighter future elsewhere.  On-going coordination of mixed migration work in the region through Mixed Migration Task Forces (MMTFs) in Somalia and Yemen, as well as other forums have identified many of the overall regional migration challenges as have the Regional Conferences on mixed migration in the Gulf of Aden, held in Yemen in 2008 and Djibouti in 2009. 

A meeting in Djibouti in March 2011 served to specifically consult on and discuss the establishment of a Regional Mixed Migration Secretariat (RMMS) for the Horn of Africa.
This establishment of the RMMS is based on extensive consultations between partners to discuss protection gaps, needs, and how key stakeholders can best collaborate to improve mixed migration management and response in the region. In addition the experience of operating a regional migration coordination system in Eastern Europe neighbourhood, namely the Söderköping Process, was used to inform the design of the RMMS. 
The RMMS is focused on improving information flow and coordination among the already existing forums in the region aimed at avoiding the duplication of responses and enhancing protection for migrants.
The Secretariat is thus not an implementing agency, but rather a coordination and research service.
The RMMS is hosted and managed by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) Regional Office for the Horn of Africa and Yemen, in Nairobi. It officially commenced its work in July 2011.
Purpose
The RMMS is looking for a motivated, enthusiastic, recent law graduate interested in migrant and human rights issues, as well as research and writing work, to assist in the piloting of an innovative and developing soft law instrument that seeks to consolidate migrant rights within a single international framework, the International Migrant Bill of Rights (IMBR).

In addition to this initiative the intern will assist RMMS in streamlining elements of its public relations and regional networking functions as well as writing analytical pieces and feature articles.  RMMS is looking to fill this internship position immediately.
Key Responsibilities 
The primary activities of the intern will include:
  • Research on Kenyan policy and legislation with regard to specific indicators to the IMBR.
  • Provide feedback on the appropriateness of the IMBR indicators to the Kenyan context.
  • Assist in the production of a report on Kenya’s conformity with the rights contained in the IMBR.
  • Assist in conceptualizing and writing analytical pieces and features.
  • Assist in updating the RMMS contact database.
  • Assist in creating and managing an interactive social media platform for the RMMS.
  • Assist in information and data management by contributing to the management of a web portal on mixed migration issues.

Reporting Arrangements: The intern will be supervised by the RMMS Project Officer with overall supervision of the RMMS Coordinator. 
Duration: The internship is for a period of 3 months 
General 
Commitments: DRC has a Humanitarian Accountability Framework, outlining its global accountability committments. 
All staff are required to contribute to the achievement of this framework into the work of DRC.

Person Specification
  • A recent graduate in law with a special interest in migration and human rights.
  • Good knowledge of International law, and how it applies in Kenya's domestic legal context.
  • General knowledge of domestic legislation, programmes and initiatives in place to address various categories of migrants in Kenya.
  • An active knowledge of the social, economic and political dynamics of the Horn of Africa region and surrounding countries.
  • An active interest in conducting research and writing activities.
  • Good command of English and excellent writing skills.
  • Good IT skills but expertise not required.
  • Enthusiastic, innovative, willing to learn, and contribute to the documentation of emerging issues in the realm of migration.

The RMMS is a small team and it is essential that candidates thrive in conditions of transparency and active team work.
