AMREF COMMUNICATION MANAGER (JOBS AND VACANCIES IN KENYA SEPTEMBER 2013)

AMREF is the largest indigenous health development non-governmental organization based in Africa. Working with and through African communities, health systems and governments, AMREF aims to close the gap that prevents people from accessing their basic right to health. AMREF is headquartered in Nairobi, and has programmes in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, South Sudan, South Africa and West Africa.

Employing over 800 staff and with an annual operating budget of approximately $90 million, AMREF is a knowledge resource for donors and partners. We are looking for an individual who is organized, highly motivated and results-oriented to join a dynamic team and head the Communications Department in AMREF Kenya and help bring lasting health change in Africa.
The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting over fifty projects to implement communication strategies and activities across the country. The position is based in Nairobi and reports to the Country Director.
Purpose of the Job:
  • To develop and maintain a positive corporate image for AMREF Kenya through managing the internal and external public and media relations thus raising AMREF’s profile.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Planning, developing and implementing communication strategies in liaison with AMREF headquarters.
  • Ensure that media efforts at the country office are coordinated and maximized.
  • Taking lead in the creation of a positive public image for AMREF Kenya and representing AMREF’s views and interests to the public through production of different public awareness materials, targeted media and events.
  • Identifying and pursuing opportunities for partnerships with local media, corporates and other stakeholders for knowledge sharing, advocacy and fundraising opportunities.
  • Supporting programmes and projects in strategizing and implementing communications and public relations activities and building their capacities.
  • Developing innovative communication products and platforms to support research, advocacy and fundraising efforts.
  • Overseeing the production of outputs, evaluating teams ability to meet deadlines, advice on suppliers and costs.
  • Budget monitoring to ensure expenditure in line with set budgets and in accordance with donor and AMREF financial rules and regulations.
  • Continuously developing and maintaining proper internal monitoring systems procedures and processes for optimal utilization and management of resources and assets.
Qualifications and Competencies:
  • The ideal candidate should have a minimum of a post graduate degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or its equivalent with over seven (7) years relevant work experience at senior management.
  • The candidate should have experience in communication, writing, editing and desktop publishing.
  • A proven track record of managing complex tasks and projects and networking with multi-stakeholders.
  • The candidate must have excellent communication and presentation skills, strong interpersonal, analytical, organisational and team leadership capabilities and high professional and ethical capability.
