FINANCE INTERN (JOBS AND VACANCIES IN KENYA OCTOBER 2013)

TITLE: Finance Intern

SUPERVISOR: Finance Officer
COUNTRY PROGRAM: Somalia
LOCATION: Nairobi

BACKGROUND
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian

The IRC has been working in Somalia since 2006, providing essential services to conflict
and disaster affected communities. The IRC has been operational in Central Somalia
(Mudug and Galgaduud), Mogadishu and Puntland regions implementing interventions in
the areas of livelihood, WASH, Governance, protection and primary health reaching out
to more than 250,000 conflict and drought affected Somalis.

SCOPE OF WORK
The finance intern will assist in Bank payment processing, filing and accounting with the
aid of the Finance Officer.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Bank Payment Processing
 Assisting in processing of payments in Finance dept by writing cheques, facilitating
approvals and preparation of remittances
 Assisting the Finance Assistant in maintaining the payments register and ensuring all
incoming payments are recorded by the relevant staff.
 Assist in reconciling supplier statements and ensuring all balance are up to date.
 Prepare all cheque and WEB (Online payments) disbursement vouchers USD, Kshs
and Euro. Ensure the payment is fully supported and duly authorized per the
authorized delineation chart before writing the cheque.
 Preparation of remittances for cheque release, filing the same and ensuring the
remittance register is duly signed.

Filing
 Rubber stamping ‘paid’ on all documents once cash vouchers and cheques are signed
and cash and cheques disbursed and before filing
 Maintain an organized and well documented (all files must be labeled properly and
visibly) and sequential filing system for all disbursement vouchers
 Assist in the retrieval and putting back documentation for audit purposes.

Accounting
 Assist in compiling accruals for closing grants and preparing journals
 Compilation of commitments for input in BVAs.
 Be receptive to the training IRC will give to develop your technical and professional
competence
 Be adaptable and flexible with a view to taking on board new tasks and new
assignments in due course

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
 Minimum CPA II qualification 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES
 Knowledge in Excel
 Knowledge of basic accounting
