FIELD RESEARCHER (KENYAN JOBS AND JOBS IN KENYA OCTOBER 2013)

Title: Field Researcher

HIAS seeks a Kenya-based field researcher to conduct a baseline survey and training for a project focused on increasing the protection of "overlooked" refugee populations in gender-based violence (GBV) programming in Chad, Kenya, South Africa and Uganda.
The Kenya Field Researcher will contribute to the development of recommendations and training materials to better serve these vulnerable GBV survivors—men and boys, LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex), older and disabled refugees.
The Kenya Field Researcher will report to the project’s Field Coordinator.

Responsibilities
The Kenya Field Researcher will carry out the following duties during the consultancy period:
  • Pilot research tools for use in organizational and refugee stakeholder interviews.
  • Identify and reach out to organizational stakeholders and refugees to set up interviews.
  • Carry out, record and transcribe interviews with organizational and refugee stakeholders in Nairobi and Kakuma Refugee Camp, using interpreters, as necessary.
  • In coordination with UNHCR HQ, develop and conduct a training workshop on the protection of overlooked refugee populations in the context of GBV prevention and response.
  • Compile a report including analysis and recommendations based on field research and training.


    Requirements
  • Extensive familiarity with refugee communities in Kenya, or Kenyan GBV survivor communities from the target groups, and with relevant organizational stakeholders in Kenya.
  • M.A. in social work, psychology, sociology or law. (B.A. in same with extensive field research experience may be sufficient).
  • Fluency in English and Swahili, with knowledge of Somali, French, Arabic or Amharic, a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Significant survey experience, including strong background conducting semi-structured interviews and data analysis.
  • Extensive experience developing and conducting trainings.
  • Deep understanding of and sensitivity to cultural, age, gender and sexual diversity.
  • Strong commitment to human rights.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
