MECHANIC

A vacancy has arisen at the British High Commission for a Mechanic. The BHC consists of 360 employees with a wide variety of experience and job roles, representing over 10 government departments working within Kenya and Somalia.  The aim of the BHC is to help “build a more stable and prosperous Kenya”, and support British nationals who visit or live in Kenya. The job is graded at A1L for which the current salary scale starts at KShs.112,883/- per month before deduction of tax.  Where the jobholder is not liable to Kenyan tax the scale will be abated under HM Treasury rules and starts at Ksh.85,146/- per month to take account of the tax they would have paid.


The Role
The High Commission has a small workshop used for servicing and repairs of the official vehicle fleet.  The position would suit a qualified mechanic with a good background in working on all aspects of vehicle repair. Particular experience of working with Landrovers, Toyotas and Isuzus would be an advantage, as would a solid background in electrical work.
Key Responsibilities
To work closely with the Transport Manager and team
The main duties include:
  •  Service, repair and maintain all official BHC, DFID vehicles.
  • Maintain records of vehicles repaired in the workshop.
  • Maintain workshop tools and equipment in good working order.

Required Skills:
The successful candidate will be required to work on the maintenance and repair of all aspects of motor vehicles.  They will source spares and liaise with local dealers to arrange maintenance work where this cannot be done in house.  They will also carry out routine servicing of vehicles, advising customers on the condition of their vehicle and testing new vehicles for mechanical faults.  Below are the required skills:-
  • Diagnostic skills;
  • Ability to use integrated diagnostic equipment:
  • Ability to test drive or examine how components interact with each other;
  • IT skills;
