Background: MSDP is a local NGO based in Mukuru Slums working with children, youth and women. MSDP in partnership with concern worldwide is implementing educational programmes in complementary schools in Nairobi slums.
Early this year, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology launched an early grade literacy program called Tusome. Concern Kenya has agreed to be a strategic partner in the roll-out of this important program.
In Nairobi, Concern will do this by partnering with MSDP in extending the reach of Tusome’s intervention to an additional 40 complementary schools in Mukuru.
To carry out this work, MSDP is looking to recruit five early grade reading coaches.
Duties and Responsibilities
Training
- Enhance literacy expertise and develop a deep understanding of Tusome’s approach and materials
- Attend Tot trainings scheduled by Concern, Tusome, and MoEST staff
- Conduct initial training to introduce class 1 teachers to the program approaches and materials
- Hold termly skills reinforcement trainings to follow up with trained teachers
- Network with Tusome, MoEST, and WERK staff to harmonize approaches and get technical support
Coaching
- Observe targeted teachers at least twice every month
- Follow observations with 1:1 mentoring sessions to discuss successes and challenge
- Provide feedback and corrections promptly and in a positive manner
- Give additional support to struggling teachers, including modeling or co-teaching
- Organize and provide support to Teacher Quality Circle monthly meetings for assigned cluster of schools
- Utilize video technology (recording and review plus showing clips of model teachers) to support mentoring discussions
- Liaise with Head Teacher at project schools during visits to share progress and enlist active support for the intervention
Monitoring & Evaluation
- Conduct baseline assessments for teacher behaviours and student learning levels
- Collect data during each school visit using a Digital Data Gathering device
- Conduct mini-assessments of student learning during each class observation
- Record key notes made during observations and discussed during mentoring meetings
- Analyse trends in data to inform areas to emphasize during skills reinforcement training
NGO Job Qualifications and Experience
- A minimum of P1 Teacher Training Certificate from a recognized teacher training institution
- Bachelors in Education or related field
- Minimum 5 years teaching experience with at least 3 years at the lower primary level
- Previous literacy training
- Experience acting as a peer coach or mentor (Previous role as a QASO or Advisor/Inspector of schools/ Teacher Advisory Centre (TAC) Tutor is preferable)
- Demonstrated success facilitating trainings (Experience as a teacher trainer at a recognized teacher training college is an advantage)
