Job description
- The Digital Strategy Section Chief drives the development of UNEP’s digital capacity for more strategic and compelling storytelling not only on its own platforms but across reputed news and social media spaces.
- The Chief drives this agenda, looking not only at strategy but products, platforms, audience development, and analytics. Digital Strategy will fulfil the objectives of an external communication and public relations office but will also deliver news media services with enhanced strategic and coordination strength, taking full cognizance of the rapid convergence of print, digital, mobile and broadcast media.
- With the chief’s oversight, the section will also support the work of the spokesperson as well as communication requirements of UNEP’s top executives with increased attention to social media and non-traditional content.
Under the guidance of the Office of the Director and the supervision of the Deputy Director, the Chief of Digital Strategy is responsible for the effective and efficient performance of the following duties:
Job Responsibilities
- Strategy and innovation: Provide overall strategic direction to the work of the section, with appropriate strategic framing for the requirements of the section’s clients, underpinned by a sustained innovation strategy that delivers the mandate of the section on the cutting edge of associated industry practices, techniques, technologies, and approaches
- Planning, monitoring, and assessment: Plan, monitor, and assess the section’s work in the context of the organisation’s communication strategy and the division’s project commitments to UNEP’s Programme of Work and its Medium Term Strategy
- Management and oversight: Manage and oversee the section’s work, including close collaboration with UNEP and UNON ICT entities, and its human and other resources, in accordance with the organisation’s policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
- Resource mobilisation: Mobilise and manage resources for the section and for the division
- Reporting and communication: Ensure timely and comprehensive analysis, reporting and documentation as per client, division, corporate, and donor requirements
- Media relations and partnerships development and management: Develop and maintain effective relationships and strategic partnerships with premiere news and social media entities and manage such initiatives for results
- Pitching and placement: Pitch and secure placement for UNEP stories, messages, and initiatives across print, digital, mobile and broadcast media platforms
- Writing and editing: Provide high-level writing and editing support in the context of the section’s work on a needs basis
- Deputy Spokesperson: Serve as the Deputy Spokesperson for UNEP upon task delegation by the Spokesperson
- Risk management: Manage risks associated with the organisation’s news media, web, and social and hybrid media work
UNEP Live and Access to Information Focal Points: Serve as the division’s focal point for UNEP Live and for the Access to Information policy
Desired Skills and Experience
- Advanced university degree in new media, communication management, journalism or related area. At least ten years of progressively sophisticated experience in running innovative / cutting edge digital communication strategies and the teams, resources, and platforms behind them.
- Position requires news editorial planning and management capacity, PR and media relations management experience, and proven commitment to innovation and results based management.
