Scope of Role: 

Reports to: Nutrition Coordinator
Dimensions: Save the Children has been operational in Kenya since 1984, providing support to children through developmental and humanitarian relief programmes delivered both directly and through local partners. 

Current programming focuses on child protection, child rights governance, education, health, HIV/AIDS, livelihoods, nutrition and WASH. 

Save the Children has an operational presence in Dadaab Refugee Camp, Eldoret, Habaswein, Mandera, Meru and Wajir. 

Currently, we have a staff complement of approximately 370 staff and expenditure of approximately US$30 million this year.

Key Areas of Accountability:

1. Nutrition Education trainings
  • Participate in the development of training curriculum and tools and facilitate/co-facilitate all nutrition education trainings
  • Provide technical, logistical and any other support for the trainings in the various divisions.
  • Liaise with relevant ministries and partner agencies in selecting participants for trainings while ensuring that priority is given to the staff working in the key agreed areas
  • Liaise with the ministry and other partners in ensuring that nutrition education are comprehensively done following set guidelines
  • Maintain a data base of the trained and active nutrition educators in the community
  • Identify needs for and participate in refresher training sessions
  • Identify a number of community leaders who will work closely with the program at the village
  • Participate in evaluation of the outcomes of the trainings
2. Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Participate in the design, development and implementation of an M&E framework for all nutrition related activities.
  • Write reports to document the process of implementation, lessons learnt and good practice and ensure information is widely disseminated
  • Collation and analysis of other existing surveillance data
  • Participate in the design and execution of nutrition surveys according to national guidelines
  • Prepare monthly activity reports as well as quarterly donor reports.
3. Supervision
  • Develop a comprehensive plan for supervision of all the field  nutrition activities
  • Assist the community health workers implementing nutrition activities to develop monthly work plans.
  • At program level supervise the quality of surveillance, support to MoH and nutrition education promotion and counselling by the trained nutrition workers and community health workers.
  • Mentor the nutrition workers to ensure that they support and supervise the community health workers in their areas of coverage as required
  • Ensure regular meetings with the nutrition and community health workers
  • Document and share lessons learnt in a comprehensive and detailed manner to enable track trends on changes on a timely basis
4. Development of nutrition education training and counselling materials
  • Design a formative research study to identify nutrition problems common in the community
  • Participate in the design/adaptation of appropriate nutrition education and promotion methods and tools, and pre- testing them with the team and community members.
  • Liaise with the health education department at the Ministry of health to adapt and produce appropriate nutrition education materials
  • Participate fully in reviewing the community training guides and counselling cards
  • Participate in development of nutrition education job aids
  • Train in the use of the job aids
  • Identify and document locally available foods and develop recipes
  • Oversee and guide staff in providing on-site cooking demonstrations and workshops
5. Network and coordinate with the relevant sectors and agencies in implementing nutrition activities at national and community level
  • Identify areas of synergy in the field with the ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of education and other implementing agencies working with communities. 
  • Come up with a comprehensive plan of activities within the identified areas of synergy with the actors named above.
  • Together with key partner ministries and other implementing partners, establish school and community based nutrition education committees.
6. Implement Community Mobilization Activities
  • Carry out community based nutritional promotional activities targeting community groups. Activities to include are: School nutrition clubs, community outreach, and facility based nutrition education focusing on IYCF, growth monitoring and maternal nutrition, dissemination of IEC materials.
  • Ensure on going community based nutritional screening, data analysis and reporting
  • Liaise and establish strong links with existing community structures including women groups, community development committees, youth groups and religious leaders.
7. Implement the development and maintenance of a referral system
  • Work with Nutrition workers to develop and maintain a referral system at community level in which community health workers refer malnourished children and mothers needing special attention to the health facilities.

Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Food & Nutrition or equivalent
  • At least two (2) years work experience in community nutrition work and implementation of nutrition education programmes, including monitoring and evaluation
  • Understanding of community management of acute malnutrition
  • Experience of and commitment to utilizing participatory approaches.
  • Experience in KAP assessments and formative research; and understanding of nutritional surveillance and information systems.
  • Proven capacity to supervise, train and coach local staff and community workers.
  • Excellent communication skills and a willingness to be respectful, kind, sensitive and empathise with children and their carers
  • Willingness and capacity to be flexible and accommodating when faced with difficult and frustrating working conditions
  • Prepared to live and work in an uncertain security environment
  • Ability and willingness to frequently travel and stay at the field
  • Strong research and data analysis skills
  • Strong report writing and computer skills
  • Fluent in written and spoken English, Kiswahili and local languages

Role Purpose: Providing transport service to SC- Wajir Office staff members, visitors or daily errands as assigned by supervisor; be responsible for the assigned vehicle and maintains the log sheet properly.

Scope of Role:
  • Reports to: Fleet Assistant
  • Staff directly reporting to this post: None
Key Areas of Accountability:


  • Provides car service with at most discipline, observing the driving safety regulation of SCI and  traffic rules;
  • Ensures that the vehicle is properly handled, kept in good condition and usable at all times;
  • Checks and cleans the vehicle every day, and ensures that  oil, lubricants, and water are maintained at the required standard levels;
  • Ensures that all gauges are properly functioning, the necessary tools/equipments are available and kept properly;
  • Maintains note and timely report on the vehicle routine service;
  • Ensures that the vehicle has enough fuel and is in good condition before embarking in transport service or heading for a field trip;
  • Monitors all the functioning part of the vehicle and reports to the mechanic if any irregularities are observed;
  • Ensures that the vehicle is used for the intended assignment as approved  by the Logistics officer;
  • Ensures that the vehicle safety belt is functional and used by self and the passengers on board;
  • Reports any accident immediately to the Logistics Assistant;
  • Maintains correct/proper and neatly recorded vehicle log sheets and submits to the Logistics Assistant;
  • Reports in writing on any maintenance need  to the logistics/field managers;
  • Performs other related duties as required.

  • Valid driving licences;
  • Driving Experience not less than 2 years, preferably in Northern Kenya region;

  • Experience of using HF radio systems, satellite phones and communications procedures;
  • Patient, adaptable and flexible;
  • Ability to travel frequently;
  • Fluent in Somalia, Kiswahili and good level in English;

Role Purpose: Ensuring proper safety, security and handling of  SCI fleets to the best interest of the organization and Manage SCI Wajir vehicle fleet in accordance to the operational needs and in compliance with the required standard procedures.
Dimensions: Save the Children has been operational in Kenya since the 1950s, providing support to children through developmental and humanitarian relief programmes delivered both directly and through local partners. 

Current programming focuses on child protection, child rights governance, education, health, HIV/AIDS, livelihoods, nutrition and WASH. 

In 2012, as part of a global reorganization process, Save the Children combined the programmes of SC UK, SC Canada and SC Finland to create a single operation in Kenya. 

In February 2014, we completed a second transition, which saw us join forces with the British INGO, Merlin, and merge their health and nutrition programmes with our own. 

Save the Children now has an operational presence in Bungoma, Dadaab Refugee Camp, Garissa, Mandera, Nairobi, Turkana and Wajir. 

We work through partners in many other parts of the country. We have a staff complement of around 300 staff and an operating annual budget of approximately US$25 million in 2014.

Reports to: Logistics Officer

Key Areas of Accountability:

 
Strategic
  • Provide effective and cost efficient resource planning and scheduling for all fleet assets within Kenya  as well as ensuring that preventative maintenance support is carried out in accordance with standard maintenance guidelines and schedules
  • Maximize the Kenya fleet efficiency and cost effectiveness through planned resource allocation in accordance with SCI Standards and Procedures and in close cooperation with all fleet management staff in place country-wide.
  • Development of Vehicle and Generator replacement plans
  • Ensure that accurate and complete accounting, reporting and internal control systems are functioning and that all relevant records are maintained.
  • Manage taxi usage, correct programme award charging and related accountability in the Nairobi office through direct liaison with pre-qualified taxi service supplier(s).
Technical / Operational
 
Fleet Management
  • Management, control and accountability of all fuel supplies within Wajir and provide fuel management support including contingency planning and storage.
  • Monitor, control and report on the use of all SCI Wajir  fleet assets.
  • Ensure that all SCI Kenya Wajir asset and driver administration is executed in a professional manner and in accordance with SCI Standards, Procedures and Kenya legal obligations.
  • Ensure that accidents and insurance claims are properly handled; insurance benefits are properly negotiated to the benefit of SCI.
  • Ensure that all SCI Wajir fleet assets are regularly checked and serviced and maintained according to preventative maintenance schedules and in line with manufacturer’s recommendations and warranty requirements.
  • Lead the production and analysis of all fleet management reports for the Wajir office  on monthly, quarterly, and annual basis for presentation to the Logistics Officer.
  • Ensure all Save the Children staff and (where applicable) partners are aware and understand local and Save the Children transport policies and their rights and responsibilities in the use of Save the Children hired and owned vehicles.
  • Ensure that vehicles are adequately equipped with tools, fire extinguishers, first aid kits and any other equipment required as part of the programmes local safety and security policies and procedures.
  • Central management of all SCI Vehicle records in Wajir Area Office.
  • Analyse and check fleet data on running costs, utilisation and recharging.
  • Ensure coordination between logistics and programme departments for planning, allocation and usage.
  • Ensure transparent and logical evaluation processes are followed for selection and contracting of locally hired vehicles in Wajir Area Office.
  • Carry out performance based appraisal of all staff under him/her and ensure effective utilization of resources
  • Set performance objectives for drivers in Wajir.

Qualifications and Experience
  • College Diploma/Certificate in Transport Management, Logistics Management or equivalent education level gained through practical experience and/or job related courses.
  • Valid driving licence (Class A B C E).
  • At least 5 years of proven experience working in Transport/Fleet Management, with minimum 3 years in supervisory positions either in commercial or humanitarian environment good interpersonal skills.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including influencing, negotiation and coaching. 
  • Experience of solving complex issues through analysis, definition of a clear way forward and ensuring buy in.
  • Commitment to Save the Children values.
  • Ability and willingness to change work practices and hours in the event of major emergencies including travelling at short notice and for extended periods of time
  • Highly organised with good administration skills for order and information management, able to develop filing systems and databases to ensure an auditable trail.
  • A high level of computer literacy (word, excel, ppt etc)
