Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning Intern at Save the Children

Role Purpose: Save the Children International is a 'full spectrum’ organisation that seeks to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children, and create lasting change in children’s lives. 

Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability & Learning (MEAL) is a core function in all Save the Children International programmes globally, representing our commitment to accountability and transparency, and is crucial aspect of programme quality management within Save the Children.
The MEAL Intern will focus on two key assignments:

1) Provide support to the endline evaluation of Save the Children’s School Health and Nutrition project
 
The Wrigley funded School Health and Nutrition project has worked for toward the goal of improving the health and educational status of children in six countries. 

In Kenya the project focuses on urban Nairobi and peri-urban Kiambu schools. 

During the life of the project, the School Health and Nutrition (SHN) interventions directly reached 37,517 children from 25 schools.

The project set out to reach the following four objectives:
  1. Availability of Services: Increase schoolchildren’s access to primary health and nutrition services.
  2. Quality of School Environment: Improve access to safe water and sanitation in targeted schools.
  3. Knowledge, Attitudes and Interest: Promote awareness and understanding of healthy behaviors and practices among schoolchildren, their teachers and parents.
  4. Policy and Support: Strengthen application of the 2009 National School Health Policy and practice at the school, district and national levels.
The MEAL Intern will work closely with an SHN Fellow from Emory University to assist the SHN team for the end-line evaluation of the Wrigley Kenya program. 

2) Provide support to the development and implementation of a Learning and Knowledge Management Strategy for save the Children’s Nairobi Managed Programs
 
As part of its MEAL roll-out plan for 2015, Save the Children Kenya is developing a Learning and Knowledge Management (LKM) strategy and system which looks at four stages of knowledge (generation, capture, sharing and application) and looks at three components of learning and knowledge management (people, processes, technology).

The MEAL Intern will work closely with the MEAL Officer for Nairobi Managed Programmes to adapt and apply the LKM strategy to different programmes managed from the Nairobi office.

Dimensions: Save the Children has been operational in Kenya since the 1950s, providing support to children through developmental and humanitarian relief programmes delivered both directly and through local partners. 

Current programming focuses on child protection, child rights governance, education, health, HIV/AIDS, livelihoods, nutrition and WASH. 

In 2012, as part of a global reorganization process, Save the Children combined the programmes of SC UK, SC Canada and SC Finland to create a single operation in Kenya. 

In February 2014, we completed a second transition, which saw us join forces with the British INGO, Merlin, and merge their health and nutrition programmes with our own. 

Save the Children now has an operational presence in Bungoma, Dadaab Refugee Camp, Garissa, Mandera, Nairobi, Turkana and Wajir. 

We work through partners in many other parts of the country. 

We have a staff complement of around 300 staff and an operating annual budget of approximately US$21 million in 2014.

Key Areas of Accountability:

Under the direct supervision of the MEAL Manager, the MEAL Intern is responsible for:
 
1) Provide support to the endline evaluation of Save the Children’s School Health and Nutrition project 

Working closely with the SHN Programme Officer, WASH Technical Advisor and SHN Fellow from Emory University:
  • Assisting with the design and development of forms and questionnaires for data collection and analysis;
  • Conducting data collection;
  • Contributing to data cleaning and analysis;
  • Assisting with research and writing or editing;
2) Provide support to the development and implementation of a Learning and Knowledge Management Strategy for Save the Children’s Nairobi Managed Programs
  • Support in the development and implementation of LKM plans for Nairobi Managed Programmes, based on the wider country office LKM strategy;
  • Assist with data and knowledge management, cleaning, and quality control
  • Support wider learning initiatives in Kenya Country Office
  • Support the MEAL team through various administrative duties.

Qualifications and Experience
 
Profile of Desired Intern
  • A degree in social science.
  • Experience in child rights programing desirable
  • Have solid knowledge and practical experience in data collection and analysis
  • Excellent organizing, facilitating, presentation and communication skills
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • The capacity and willingness to work well on their own initiative and respond to challenges
  • Ability to work with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural  teams
  • Willingness to sign and abide by the Save the Children Child Safeguarding Policy
