Sign Language Interpreter (Jobs in Kenya, March 2015)

1. INTRODUCTION

Handicap international (HI) is an INGO specializing in the field of disability and development. A strong emphasis placed on empowering persons with disabilities and their representatives, through their full participation into mainstream development processes and the provision of appropriate and accessible social, health and rehabilitation services, in order to ensure equal opportunities for all.

1.1 CONTEXT ANALYSIS

Handicap international is implementing a child protection project 'Ubuntu care: confronting sexual violence against children with disability in Kenya, Rwanda and Burundi'. In Kenya the project geographical coverage is Trans-Nzoia County. The project aims to address the root causes and mitigate the consequences of violence against children especially those with disabilities. Most service providers do not have sign language communication skills and therefore face problem to interact with clients who have a hearing problem. Also our project has interventions tailored to schools some of which have children with hearing impairment and hence the need to engage professional sign language interpreters. 

Handicap International seeks to engage three sign language interpreters who will be available on call at service provision points for children survivors of sexual violence. The sign language interpreters will also be utilized during children meetings, children clubs,trainings and forums organized by Ubuntu care project where children with hearing impairment will be participating. 

2. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SING LANGUAGE INTERPRETER 

Provide sign language interpretation services especially at the Gender recovery centre, Child protection unit at police station or during testimonies at the courts for children with hearing impairments when called upon.

1. Inform HI whenever called upon to provide services at any service provision points.
2. Be on time whenever called upon and be present until end of the function
3. The holder of this position MUST practice confidentiality; information gathered from survivors can only be shared with authorized officers of the government mandated to handle cases of sexual violence (police, children’s department or magistrates during hearing). 

3. RESPONSIBILITIES OF HI

1. Facilitate the sign language interpreter’s with allowances as will be agreed upon.
2. Develop and facilitate signing of a contract with the sign language interpreter before engaging him/her.
3. Share the service TOR with the sign language interpreter
4. Provide transport to the service provision venue especially when services are needed away from Kitale town. 

4. SERVICE DURATION AND LOCATION 

The SLI services will be provided in Kitale immediately a suitable person is identified. 
The contract for the successful candidate will run from 10 December 2015. 

5. REQUIREMENTS
 Diploma in Kenyan Sign language with at least 3 years’ experience working experience
 MUST have Knowledge and experience in working with children with hearing impairment.
 Ready to offer sign language interpretation services on call
 Ready to respect HI terms and conditions during the contract period
 Experience in counseling will be an added advantage
 Good knowledge of Ubuntu care project 
 Be a resident of Trans-Nzoia County for ease access 

6. RESOURCE PERSON

Within the framework of the service provision, the sign language interpreter will be asked to collaborate with Handicap International’s teams and in particular with the Child protection project officer and the child protection project manager who will be the point of contact. 

7. BUDGET

 Payment will be Ksh. 1, 500 per day for the sign language interpretation services. The package includes the transport for the sign language interpreter. 
 Only the sign language interpreters providing the service with prior authorization by HI will be entitled for the payment.
